Cam Newton has agreed to a one year deal with the New England Patriots. What? I’m telling you, if you told me some of the stuff would happen over a year ago I would tell you that there was no chance in hell. Things I never thought I would see – Antonio Brown catch one touchdown pass from Tom Brady in a Patriots uniform. Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski on the Tampa bay Buccaneers. Cam Newton on the New England Patriots. Cam’s deal is incentive based so he will be compensated for his performance. The deal makes a lot of sense for both sides and this is going to be interesting to watch.
Why the deal makes sense for Cam Newton?
He’s coming off of an injury and the Carolina Panthers decided that they preferred to move forward with Teddy Bridgewater who is four years younger than Cam. The Panthers released Cam back in March. It’s getting late into the off-season and there weren’t many other (if any) opportunities for Cam Newton to get back on an NFL roster. Since 2013, Cam has had up and down seasons with final records of 12-4, 5-8-1, 15-1, 6-8, 11-5, and 6-8. Last year was 0-2 before he was injured. Needless to say, he’s due for one of his up years and that’s something the New England Patriots need as they move on from Tom Brady.
Why the deal makes sense for the New England Patriots?
They bring in a QB who is a former MVP and has 125 career games under his belt in the NFL. A lot of people believed that the Patriots would be moving forward with Jarrett Stidham as their starter this season. It was tough to believe that would be the case even when the Patriots passed on QBs in the NFL Draft. Stidham played in just three games last season and he was just 2-4 on passing attempts with one interception that was returned for a touchdown to NOT cover a -22 point spread against the New York Jets.
It will be interesting to see if Cam buys into the Patriot way. However, if the Pats can get a high level season out of Cam for a good price, it will be another genius move added to Bill Belichick’s legacy. I don’t think we will see it but could you imagine the New England Patriots vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Super Bowl 55?
How does the deal effect NFL Betting Odds?
The Patriots odds to win the Super Bowl moved from 25-1 to 20-1 after the signing of Cam Newton. The Pats odds to win the AFC moved from 10-1 to 9-1 after the deal. The team total has moved from 8 to 9 (-130). The Patriots moved back to the favorite to win the AFC East over the Buffalo Bills. Cam Newton did move into the Top 15 in the MVP prop bet at 35-1. Tom Brady is #5 at 13-1.
What to expect from Cam Newton and the New England Patriots?
The Patriots are in a better spot with Cam Newton at quarterback than Jarrett Stidham. The experience and skill level of Cam is the difference there. Belichick may think highly of Stid the kid but he is clearly not ready to hand over the reigns just yet. The season win total is now set at 9 for the Pats. However, let’s not forget that they have a very tough schedule this season. They will be at Seattle Seahawks, at Kansas City Chiefs, home vs the San Francisco 49’ers, home vs the Baltimore Ravens, taking on both L.A. Rams and Chargers, and don’t forget they have to play the Buffalo Bills twice. They will also host the Las Vegas Raiders who Peter King has ranked 8th in his power rankings.
With Stidham leading the offense, I truly was expecting a 7-9 or 8-8 season at best. Cam’s experience and athleticism changes that. I think 10-6 or even 11-5 is more realistic for the Patriots. I also believe that they will win the AFC East.
