It was a long wait but it was well worth the wait. We kicked off our season by going 3-0 collectively (2-0 VIP and 3-0 for Daily Picks). Again, just to clarify – anyone can sign up for the VIP blog or purchase picks one day at a time on our Daily Picks page. Sometimes the picks will be the same, sometimes they will be different. The VIP blog is for people who want to commit long term and bet every day and the Daily Picks page gives bettors the option if they just want to bet here and there and buy picks one day at a time. Either way, we were ALL winners on Opening Night with three easy winners. Let’s take a look back at the picks and review the results.
Yankees (Cole) (-135)
Gerrit Cole will make his long awaited Yankee debut after signing the $324 million contract in the offseason. He will be pitching against the same team that he made his final start of the season in last year’s World Series. Well kind of. The Nationals will be missing their 3 hitter from last year, Anthony Rendon who hit .319 who signed with the Angels in the offseason. They will also be without long time veteran Ryan Zimmerman who opted out of the season. Cole only allowed 3 hits and 1 run over 7 innings against the Nationals the last time he faced them. The one run did come off of a Juan Soto homerun. Collectively, the Nats players who have ever faced Cole have a combined .219 avg with 24 strikeouts.
Max Scherzer will pitch for the Nats and we took him in the final Game of the World Series last season at plus money but we are going against him tonight. No question that he has dominant stuff as well but this Yankees lineup is looking potent. The Bronx Bombers have been on display in their summer camp. I’ll also point out that the Nationals lost 10 of Scherzer’s first 12 starts last season. It’s not like he got rocked in those starts but losing 10 out of 12 is losing 10 out of 12. I like the Yankees lineup to get Cole the run support he needs tonight and he shouldn’t need much.
Wow, how about that Gerrit Cole guy? Complete game, 1 hitter! What a debut!? Lol, I’m kidding. This one was shortened due to the monsoon that hit Washington D.C. in the 6th inning. Luckily, the Yankees had already pulled ahead 4-1 and were threatening for more when the weather hit. Giancarlo Stanton got the party started in the first inning with a 2 run homerun. Gerrit Cole did look good tonight other than the homerun he gave up to a 150 pound guy. Good win for the Yanks here and a good start for Cole, the $324 million man.
Dodgers (Kershaw) (-1.5)
The Dodgers, my World Series pick kick off the season against their division rival San Francisco Giants. The Giants have seen a lot of Clayton Kershaw over the years. Their lineup has 264 combined at bats and they have struggled to a .178 avg. The Giants will also be without Buster Poser and his .302 career average in the middle of their lineup. He has decided that he will sit out the 2020 season.
The Dodgers lineup has 144 at bats against Johnny Cueto and come in hitting .306 against him. There’s a lot of hype around Mookie Betts this season and he comes in 3 for 4 against Cueto in the past. Corey Seager has 3 career homeruns off of Cueto. Cueto hasn’t pitched a full season since 2017 so it will be interesting to see if he can bounce back from his injuries. He might, but even a healthy Cueto will have trouble with this STACKED Dodgers lineup. Give me the Dodgers to cover -1.5.
Was it shocking when it came out that Clayton Kershaw wouldn’t be making this start? He always seems to gag in big games and he found a way to do that again tonight. Some books voided this bet but I know a lot of you checked in after Kershaw was scratched and I confirmed that we should still ride with the Dodgers because the Giants are just so bad this year. Sure enough, blowwwww out winner for us.
LA Dodgers Team Total Over (4 1/2)
This line is extremely appetizing, and we are ALL over it! The Dodgers come into the new season as the favorites to win the World Series, and a huge reason for that is their stellar lineup they boast. Their lineup will be coming into this game with a career .301 batting average against Cueto in 143 at bats. If you want to break it down further, some of the Dodgers star players averages vs Cueto include Betts .750, Muncy .500, Bellinger .353, and Turner .355. With this lineup vs Cueto, who has only pitched 16 innings (Giving up 9 earned over those 16 innings) since coming back from Tommy John Surgery at the age of 34, the over 4 ½ is a steal in this game.
The line changed as we got closer to first pitch and moved up to 5.5. That’s because anyone with a brain realized how much of a lock it was. We figured the Dodgers would score earlier and more often but they came through for us to score 8 runs and go way over. KIKE, do you love me? We love you Kike Hernandez. Guy is clutch when it comes to closing out overs. Two scoops from the Dodgers for us tonight.
